World Password Day takes place every year on the first Thursday in May. This day is dedicated to promoting better password habits, as they are the gatekeepers to our digital identities and allow us to access online financial services, health portals, work email and network equipment, shopping, social media, and more.
Secure passwords are critical. Practicing good password hygiene by using long, unique, and complex passwords will protect your valuable information. Taking care of and paying close attention to your cyber accounts is important. We have some tips for you:
- Change your password every few month, or when you feel an account has been compromised
- Update your old passwords to a long, strong combination of numbers, letters, and symbols
- Turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts
- Password protect your wireless router
- Do not store passwords on your computer or phone
- When done using a program, log off
- Periodically remove temporary Internet files from your browser history
When creating or updating a password, remember to avoid using passwords that can easily be guessed. Use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Although it may be difficult, you should not write down or share your password. Taking a few minutes out of the day to update your passwords will help you avoid a cyber attack.
