In April, GoDaddy discovered they had a data breach that affected approximately 28k customers. While the exact cause hasn’t been revealed, GoDaddy found that a CSR was trapped by a phishing email. Phishing emails seem to be getting harder to identify as time progresses. Hackers are getting smarter, which in turn gives them the opportunity to gather more information on companies and their clients. It is more important than ever that companies and their employees and customers are able to identify phishing content. Common features of phishing emails include:
- Too Good To Be True Content
- Sense of Urgency
- Hyperlinks That Don’t Match
- Unusual or Unknown Sender
- Unexpected Attachments
- Typos and Grammatical Errors
When you receive an email, make sure you review the contents and ensure it is legitimate. Phishing can lead to a number of problems for a company and/or for the customers involved. When online predators send phishing emails, it is typically in attempt to gain usernames, passwords, and financial information. Companies should implement cybersecurity training to educate your employees about the risks of phishing emails and how to recognize them. For more information, visit our Phishing page.
