The first Thursday in May is dedicated to World Password Day and is meant to create awareness for good password security. Technology is changing by the hour, which means businesses need to implement a combination of security defenses to prevent cybercriminals accessing their data. And while passwords can no longer be the primary form of authentication, using a strong password adds a layer of protection to your information.
Below are some simple ways you can ensure your passwords are strong
- Never write your password down; if you need a way to remember it, use ‘code words’ that will help you remember what it is but nobody else can figure it out
- Don’t use the same password for each account
- Use a longer password. At least 8 characters long
- Use a combination of letters (upper and lower case), numbers, and symbols (if they are allowed)
- Use numbers and symbols in place of letters. For example:
a = @
e = 3
i = ! or 1
o = 0
s = $
Passwords are critical gatekeepers to our digital identities, allowing us to access online shopping, dating, banking, social media, private work and life communications. Take the time today and update yours!
