Combat the Threat of Spam

We are all familiar with spam… the unsolicited, usually commercial messages, sent to a large number of recipients over email – a.k.a., junk mail! Spam is a common vector for cyber attacks. Not only is it annoying, but the content in the email can be dangerous as they may contain links to malicious downloads or lead to phishing sites or sites that are hosting malware.

Companies need to combat spam with a Spam filter. Spam filters quarantine unsolicited and unwanted email messages, preventing those messages from getting to your inbox. Spam filters uses various criteria to target these emails, such as particular words in the subject line or suspicious word patterns or frequency.

Defend Yourself Against Spam

  • Delete messages that look suspicious.
  • Do not download attachments sent from someone you do not know.
  • Do not click links from someone you do not know.
  • If your spam filter provides a quarantine report of messages it intercepts, check this report regularly.
  • If you get an email asking for your credentials or to change your password, verify the email is legit outside of email. For example, call your IT department or the provider that sent it.
  • Check the address the email came from and determine if it’s valid. For instance, if you are getting an email from your bank, does the domain match?
